22nd Century Laments
Textile works from 2020-2021.
All around 11x14,” embroidery on reclaimed fabrics.
I use eco-gothicism and eco-horror as a melodramatic expression of and revolt against our apex epochal crisis. Channeling the vampire as the "eco-warriors that planet Earth desperately needs," rising against a "global ecosystem that can no longer tolerate the all-consuming forces of ... consumerism" (Simon Bacon), I use this school of eco-critical thought to acknowledge the adversities of our maybe-futures without surrendering to them.
Through quarantine I have been working on these textile works, "22nd Century Laments." They are embroidered on reclaimed fabric and are banal vignettes about our precarious present and possible futures: eco-gothic exercises addressing our societal alienation from and our transactional relationship with nature.
